Many thanks to all of the Community Action Planning Council employees, friends and partners in the community who participated in our recent Blood Drive!  On March 16, we surpassed our goal, and 23 units were donated.  This makes a tremendous difference to people in need, and it’s a wonderful way for us to contribute to the well-being of our community.  We are appreciative of our bakers, helpers, and especially our donors!

Donating blood is a simple thing to do, and it can make a big difference in the lives of others.  If you were unable to participate in the blood drive and would like more information about donating blood, visit

QUALITYstarsNY Readiness Project Workshops Now Available

Posted by DCole in CAPC News - (Comments Off on QUALITYstarsNY Readiness Project Workshops Now Available)

QUALITYstarsNY is a quality rating and improvement system that is designed to increase quality in early care and learning settings in New York State. Child care programs who participate get a star rating, similar to hotel star ratings. The child care programs also develop a quality improvement plan and receive support from QUALITYstarsNY to implement the improvement plan.

The Early Care & Learning Council, in cooperation with QUALITYstarsNY, has developed three QUALITYstarsNY Readiness Project workshops that are now available throughout New York State. These workshops are intended to inform child care program adminstrators about QUALITYstarsNY and help those programs prepare for the star rating system. The workshops will take place locally at at the Community Action Planning Council on several dates in May.  Workshops are offered at no cost to participants.

Workshops are facilitated by experienced early learning trainers; topics are as follows:

  • Introduction to QUALITYstarsNY
  • Self-Assessment: Preparing for Program Improvement
  • First Steps for Quality Improvement

Click here for workshop dates and registration form or phone 315.782.4900, ext. 239.

The Watertown Head Start Parent Committee is conducting a diaper drive in support of the Community Action Planning Council Food Pantry.  Diapers are needed in all sizes.   Visit one of the following Watertown businesses and make a diaper donation to support a low-income family.  Diapers will be collected through March 7, 2012.

  • Asbury United Methodist Church
  • Avon Shoes
  • Bethany United Methodist Church
  • Cheney Tire
  • Community Action Planning Council Food Pantry
  • Flower Memorial Library
  • Hilltop Apartments
  • Holy Family Church
  • LeRay Street Apartments
  • Skyline Apartments
  • Stream International
  • YMCA

Each Head Start Center is home to a Parent Committee.  Meetings are held monthly throughout the school year, during which parents and children enjoy fun and educational activities together.  Parent Committees routinely participate in activities and special projects that support the community at large.  We are fortunate – and grateful – for the strong support and participation of our Head Start Parent Committees.  Please help them make this diaper drive a great success!  For more information about Head Start, contact 315.782.4900, ext. 236.
