What is it?
Head Start is a federally funded, comprehensive preschool program designed for children ages 3 and 4 whose families meet federal income requirements in Jefferson County. Children in high risk environments or with special needs may be eligible regardless of income.
Head Start provides, at no cost to families:
¨Early childhood education in licensed classrooms or in the homes
¨Research based curriculum.
¨Health, dental and developmental screenings
¨Outdoor activities
¨Field Trips
¨Transportation for most families
¨Family Service Meals
¨Integrated services for children with special needs
¨Kindergarten transition services
¨Academic and full-year services
¨Full day services in Watertown for children of working parents
¨Family support and case management services

¨South Jefferson School District – Wilson Elementary Bldg.
¨Indian River School District- Theresa Primary Bldg.
¨General Brown School district- Dexter Elementary Bldg.
¨Carthage Center- 226 N. School St. ¨Watertown Center- 518 Davidson St.
Home Based Services:
Head Start teachers visit families in rural areas of Jefferson County who are not able to transport their child to a center based program or who live more than 10 miles from a designated center. Families receive a comprehensive home-visit with child and parent(s) weekly for 90 minutes and peer group opportunities twice monthly at respective centers.
