Community Action Thankful for Holiday Support

Posted by DCole in CAPC News - (Comments Off on Community Action Thankful for Holiday Support)

As we approach the holidays, agency staff worry about whether we can meet the needs of the low-income families in our community.  Will there be enough resources to ensure that our friends and neighbors are able to enjoy a holiday meal?  Will they have warm coats to face the winter weather?  Will children have presents to open on Christmas morning?

Every year, our worry is dissolved by the generous spirit of our community.  This year is no exception.  Last week, a check arrived in the mail from our friends at North Country Orthapaedic Group to help with holiday meal supplies.  A few days later, we were invited to Jefferson-Lewis BOCES where a group of Criminal Justice students organized a coat drive.  On Monday, Ed Jones of Advanced Business Systems made a delivery of frozen turkeys.  And just like that, the busy holiday season at Community Action has begun … and most importantly, the needs of the community are being met.

Community Action wishes to thank the many individuals, businesses and community groups who share their time and resources, making a better community.  From all of us to all of you, happy Thanksgiving … and best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season!IMG_7719

Holiday Assistance for Low-Income Families

Low-income parents who are worried about providing for their children at Christmas can find help through the Holiday Angels program.  Holiday Angels is a collaborative effort of organizations and individuals working together to ensure that children of low-income families have gifts for Christmas.  Families in need can apply for Holiday Angels at the location within their home community (sites listed below).  Click here for complete details.

  • Salvation Army, Watertown
  • Rohde Center, Adams
  • Antwerp Town Hall, Antwerp
  • VEM Food Pantry, Carthage
  • Presbyterian Church, Chaumont
  • Clayton, Alexandria Bay, Thousand Islands Region: Applications accepted by phone.
  • Indian River Baptist Church, Philadelphia
  • A New Life Church, Depauville
  • Dexter Presbyterian Church, Dexter

Families are encouraged to apply early.  The child’s first name, along with gender, age, and Christmas wish, are placed on a paper angel.  No other identifying information is included. Angels are displayed on the Angel Tree at Salmon Run Mall (November 13 – December 18) or announced on Tunes 92.5 FM during the Christmas Crusade 4 Kids campaign (November 23 – December 21).

Help Make Christmas Wishes Come True

Community members are invited to sponsor a child by selecting a name and Christmas wish from either the Angel Tree or Tunes 92.5 FM.  Unwrapped gifts valued at $25 should be returned, along with the paper angel, to the location from which they were selected – either the Angel Tree at (Salmon Run Mall, Watertown) or Tunes 92.5 FM studios (242 Washington Street, Suite 4A, Watertown).  Community Action Planning Council sorts the gifts which are later picked up by partnering agencies for distribution.

Community Action Planning Council coordinates the Holiday Angels program in partnership with a number of community organizations and businesses, including Bernier Carr Group, Catholic Charities, Jaycees, Kiwanis, local food pantries, Jreck Subs, Salmon Run Mall, Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, Tunes 92.5 FM and Watertown Urban Mission.

Thanks to the efforts of the many partners of Holiday Angels and the generosity of the local community, 2,570 children in Jefferson County received gifts last year.
